MOT test fees

An MOT test fee is outside the scope of VAT, so no VAT is charged on it. The rest of the job is unaffected. Which rule applies to you depends on whether you do the test yourself.

We are an approved MOT test centre You test the vehicle yourself. The fee is outside the scope of VAT up to the DVSA statutory maximum for that class of vehicle.

We send tests to another garage You are not a test centre. Only what you actually pay the test centre is outside the scope. Anything you add on top is your own fee for arranging it, and that part is standard-rated.

Statutory maximum test fee DVSA's maximum for the classes you test. It is £54.85 for a car, but lower for motorcycles and higher for minibuses, so set whichever applies to your work. This is a legal maximum: you may charge less, never more.

What the test centre charges you Your actual cost per test. Only you know this number, and it is the one that decides how much of the fee carries no VAT.

Let me mark a line as the MOT test fee Adds a tick box to labour lines. Ticking it takes that line out of the VAT calculation.

This affects your VAT return. Flowly will apply the rule you have chosen above to every job where you tick the box. It cannot tell whether that rule is the right one for your business. If you are not sure this is right for you, check with your own accountant before you turn it on.

Export for your accountant

Two CSV files for a date range you choose, one button each: every invoice with its VAT breakdown, and every logged expense. For a spreadsheet or accounting software, not for Flowly Standard - use "Take your data out" above for that.

Xero sales account code 200 is Xero's usual Sales account. Saved with Save changes.

Days to pay 0 means due on the invoice date.

Each invoice becomes one line for labour and parts at its VAT rate, and one more for an MOT test fee outside the scope of VAT, if it has one. The VAT is the invoice's own figure. Payments aren't included, so the invoices arrive in Xero unpaid: mark them paid there, from your bank feed. In Xero, open Invoices, choose Import, and pick Tax exclusive when it asks. Importing the same dates twice puts the invoices in twice.

Save the work you do most. A package linked to a job type above is added when that type is ticked. One that isn't linked shows as its own button after the job types.

Mobile work

I go out to customers' cars Each job gets an address, filled in from the customer's and changeable per job, with a link for directions.

Directions open in The job page, Today's Jobs, the calendar and the technician's job card link all open it.

Job cards

Mileage required before a job card can be marked complete The technician types the car's mileage on their job card link. With this on, they can't mark the job complete there until it's in. You can still mark it complete yourself.

Downloads everything in this account as a backup file that Flowly Standard, the offline version, can open directly: customers, vehicles, jobs, invoices, expenses and your settings. Nothing here is changed or removed, and you can do it as often as you like.

Job photos are included in the file. Health checks, text message history and consent records, and reg lookup history stay here, because Standard has nowhere to put them. Tyre and brake readings, invoice notes and payment methods all come across.
